Jeff Seal HomesOn Tuesday November 8th Jeff Seal and his associate Abby where kind enough to take time out of their day to give our class a tour of a couple of their most recent projects. The enthusiasm that they shared about their projects was infectious, and the grandeur and beauty of these two homes where apparent from the first sight of the front door. The aspects of the house that where the most outstanding and notable where the great variety of concepts in ceiling design. The rooms and hallways had a large quantity of different ceilings that despite their differences they all where cohesive within the home. The first home was almost finished and the idea behind the ceiling structures where very clear. From a groin vault in the front entry to arched ceilings in the kitchen, dining room, and hallway the view above was intriguing and eye catching. In the kitchen a low grade arch vault spanned the entire width of the kitchen ceiling. The Romans used concrete but Jeff Seal and his designer decided to manufacture the ceiling with a wood frame supporting an entirely antique brick ceiling. Many of the ceilings inside this home where dropped down lower than a normal ceiling to create an atmosphere of comfort and hominess. At the top of the stairs a gust room with a sixteen foot tall ceiling creates a tower to finish of the street that the house is placed on and the grandness emitted by the height would make any guest want to overstay their welcome.Jeff Seal and his team do a great job of using an enormous variety of shapes, textures, and colors within their design without overwhelming the senses. Mr. Seal said that the goal when designing a house is to make everything unnoticeable. What he meant by this comment was that as beautiful and unique as everything in the house is a person walking through it should not be able to automatically walk into the room and pick something out that doesn’t really go with the rest of the space. All of the elements in a house including the structural elements should work together to create a comfortable living environment and nothing should stand out as odd or a little off. While listening to Jeff Seal talk about his designs, ideas, and process’s it was apparent from the beginning the amount of enthusiasm that he and his designers have for their projects. The amount of time, effort, and creativity that him and his staff is enormous and they would not be able to achieve the beauty in their designs that they do without the inspirations and enthusiasm that they all have for the job.
