Balance
In the interior design world there are principles of interior design, one of those principles is balance. Balance, applied by interior designers, is the feeling and appearance of balanced weight in the room. In other words the room is symmetrical.
There are three different types of balance; symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial. Symmetrical balance is the most obvious and traditional form of balance found in interiors. Symmetrical balance is when a line could be drawn down the center of the room and both sides would be almost completely identical to each other. Asymmetrical balance is more characteristic of modern design. In asymmetrical design balance is achieved through a more casual and less obvious feeling. however it is more difficult to do because it suggests movement and is more exciting. Radial symmetry is when all the elements in the space are situated around a center point. This type of symmetry is the least commonly used in interior applications, however it can create a very interesting space.
This room is a fantastic example of radial balance. Because of the odd shape of the room it would have been very difficult to apply the traditional symmetrical balance and the octagonal shapes that make up the carpet are perfectly mimicked by the radial symmetry of the space layout. The couch has a similar shape to that of the shapes on the floor so that the lines are carried throughout the space. furniture centered around the small glass coffee table and interesting chandelier create a symmetry with radial balance. If you where to draw lines radiating like sun rays out from that central coffee table they would surly meet with the surrounding furniture. The two small chairs are ideally placed on the side of the room with the low slanted ceiling, if the large couch had been place here the balance of the room would have been thrown off.
Radial symmetry can be difficult to achieve without making the space very obviously situated. Because of the requirements that the shape of this room provides the application of radial symmetry is ideal. Not many designers would have thought this to be an obvious inspiration however when applied correctly radial symmetry can create an interesting interior.
